The Global SOF Foundation is honored to announce that Lieutenant Governor of Ohio, Jim Tressel, will deliver the closing keynote address at this year’s Modern Warfare Week.
This is a monumental addition to our lineup. For those in the GSOF community, the name “Tressel” resonates far beyond the football field. He is a man whose entire career, from the gridiron to the statehouse, has been a masterclass in building and leading high-performance teams. His philosophy, often called “The Tressel Doctrine,” is built on core values of integrity, service, and holistic development—principles that mirror the SOF ethos.
As we analyzed his extensive history for this event, it became clear that Lt. Governor Tressel isn’t just a “speaker”; he is the embodiment of the principled leadership of community champions. His story is not just one of winning, but of building a legacy that has shaped leaders in sports, education, and public service.
From the Gridiron to Government: A Career of Unparalleled Leadership
Jim Tressel’s career path is exceptionally rare, demonstrating an unparalleled ability to lead in vastly different arenas. Many know him as the Hall of Fame coach who returned Ohio State to national prominence, but his foundation was built on two decades of methodical, values-based program-building.
His head coaching journey began at Youngstown State University, where he took over a struggling program and forged a dynasty. From 1986 to 2000, he led the Penguins to four NCAA Division I-AA National Championships. This was not a fluke; it was the result of a disciplined system rooted in fundamentals, composure, and a “team-first” mentality.
In 2001, he accepted the head coaching position at The Ohio State University. In just his second season, he did what many thought was impossible: he led the Buckeyes to an undefeated 14-0 season, culminating in a dramatic victory in the 2002 BCS National Championship. This victory was a validation of his entire philosophy. His tenure in Columbus was defined by extraordinary success, including seven Big Ten Conference titles and a remarkable 9-1 record against his arch-rival, Michigan.
But Tressel’s ambition was never limited to the football field. After his coaching career, he seamlessly transitioned into high-level academic administration, serving as the president of Youngstown State University. There, he applied his “Tressel Doctrine” to education, focusing on student success, operational excellence, and community engagement.
Now, he serves the people of Ohio as their Lieutenant Governor, bringing a lifetime of executive experience to public service. This unique trajectory—from a Hall of Fame coach to a successful university president to a statewide elected official—gives him a perspective on leadership that few in the country possess. He will bring this wealth of experience to the Modern Warfare Week stage.
The Tressel Doctrine: A Philosophy for Leaders
To measure Jim Tressel’s impact in wins and losses is to miss the point. His legacy is defined by the “Tressel Doctrine,” a value-driven approach centered on integrity, composure, and the holistic development of his people.
He was famously nicknamed “The Senator” not just for his calm, strategic demeanor, but for his deep belief in doing things “the right way.” He consistently preached that success was a product of character. His players were expected to be more than just athletes; they were expected to be outstanding students, disciplined citizens, and future professionals.
This philosophy is a perfect parallel to the ethos of the Special Operations community. SOF operators are selected, trained, and trusted to be more than just “trigger-pullers.” They are quiet professionals, diplomats, strategic thinkers, and leaders who must operate with absolute integrity in the most complex environments on earth.
Tressel’s keynote will explore this very theme: building leaders of character. He understands that a high-performance team isn’t just about talent; it’s about a shared culture, a commitment to a higher purpose, and the individual discipline to execute a mission flawlessly.
A Legacy of Service: The Tressel Tree’s Military Roots
The Tressel philosophy’s emphasis on service is not theoretical; it is a core part of his personal history and is reflected in the paths of those he mentored.
The “Legacy of Service” angle begins with his father, Lee Tressel, a Hall of Fame coach in his own right, who served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II. This foundation of duty and patriotism was a cornerstone of the Tressel family and was passed down through his coaching.
While Tressel produced dozens of NFL stars, he also fostered an environment where service to the nation was a respected and honored path. This is clearly demonstrated in the stories of several of his players:
- Tony Gonzales (U.S. Navy): Before he was a standout wide receiver for Ohio State, Tony Gonzales served as a U.S. Navy Cryptologic Technician. His journey is a testament to the diverse paths to success. After his football career, Gonzales continued his life of service and is now a U.S. Congressman representing Texas’s 23rd district.
- Jeff Wilkins (U.S. Army): A standout kicker at Youngstown State, Wilkins put his football career on hold to serve in the U.S. Army. His service is a powerful example of the “citizen-soldier” model, and he later went on to a highly successful 14-year career in the NFL.
- Chris Gamble (South Carolina Air National Guard): Even while playing for the Buckeyes, All-American cornerback Chris Gamble served his country as a member of the South Carolina Air National Guard. His ability to balance the immense pressures of top-tier college football with military duty is a remarkable feat of discipline.
- Nate Salley (U.S. Army): A hard-hitting safety and team captain at Ohio State, Salley’s leadership translated directly to the military. After his NFL career, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army, further bridging the gap between Tressel’s program and the armed forces.
These stories are a direct reflection of the Tressel Doctrine in action. The program didn’t just build athletes; it built men of character who understood the value of service.
Building a Generation of Leaders
The “Tressel Coaching Tree” is a critical part of his legacy. A coaching tree represents all the assistant coaches who worked under a head coach and then went on to become head coaches themselves. Tressel’s tree is one of the most successful and expansive in modern football, a testament to his ability to develop other leaders.
His philosophy was not proprietary; it was meant to be shared. He mentored his assistants, empowering them with his principles of leadership, which they then carried to their own programs.
The branches of his tree include some of the most respected names in college football, such as:
- Mark Dantonio: Won multiple Big Ten Championships as head coach of Michigan State.
- Luke Fickell: Led the University of Cincinnati to a historic College Football Playoff berth.
- Mark Stoops: Became the all-time winningest coach at the University of Kentucky.
This illustrates a vital concept for the SOF community: the “force multiplier.” Lt. Governor Tressel wasn’t just a leader; he was a leader of leaders. His keynote will offer invaluable insights for anyone tasked with building, training, and mentoring the next generation of leadership within their own organization.
The Mark of Excellence: Developing Elite NFL Talent
While his core focus was on character, the output was undeniable excellence. We need to highlight the incredible number of players Tressel sent to the NFL, and the list is staggering. Over 60 players from his Ohio State teams alone were drafted by the NFL.
This “pipeline” is proof that a values-based, disciplined approach is not at odds with elite performance—it is the driver of it. He proved you can demand integrity and win championships. He knew how to identify raw talent, mold it with discipline, and prepare it for success at the highest possible level.
The list of NFL stars who played under Tressel is a “who’s who” of the sport, including Pro Bowlers and Super Bowl champions like:
- Malcolm Jenkins
- Cam Heyward
- Ted Ginn Jr.
- A.J. Hawk
- Nick Mangold
- Donte Whitner
- Mike Nugent
This ability to consistently produce top-tier talent speaks to a system that is repeatable, scalable, and built on a foundation of excellence.

From building a dynasty at Youngstown State to winning a national title at Ohio State, from leading a major university to serving the people of Ohio, his journey is a testament to the fact that principled leadership is the key to success in any arena.
His “Tressel Doctrine” of integrity, service, and holistic development is a message that will resonate deeply with the Global SOF community.
