In the complex world of defense acquisition, GSOF’s core mission has always been connecting the right solution provider with the right Special Operation Forces (SOF) program at the right moment. For decades, this involved Herculean efforts in spreadsheets and a reliance on tribal knowledge. But what if we could accelerate this vital connection and cut through the noise to truly empower innovation?

Enter USUL, the groundbreaking AI platform transforming how defense contractors navigate the federal landscape. At GSOF, we aren’t just observing this revolution; we’re driving it. Our partnership with USUL creates a synergy that benefits government customers, our corporate partners, and the entire SOF ecosystem. This isn’t just about software; it’s about the future of defense.

The Visionary Code: From DC to Disruptor

Every groundbreaking solution begins with a problem, and for USUL’s co-founder and CEO, Jarren Reid, that problem was personal. Growing up in the DC “beltway,” Jarren was immersed in the defense world. But he wasn’t content with the status quo. His frustration with the local innovation ecosystem led him to Stanford, a place he affectionately calls “an incubator with dorms,” to pursue a more disruptive path.

It was there Jarren connected with his co-founders, Oliver and Joon. Their journey took a pivotal turn in Stanford’s renowned “Hacking for Defense” program, a course linking engineering talent with national security challenges. Over ten weeks, they interviewed 200 people across the Pentagon, contracting officers, program managers, and staffers. The overwhelming, recurring pain point? The manual, cumbersome government contracting process. People kept saying, “This sucks. It’s so manual. Maybe use AI?” They had stumbled upon the problem USUL was destined to solve.

With a rough prototype, they applied to the highly selective Y Combinator. The intense program forced a critical pivot: while their initial goal was to fix contracting for the government, the three-month deadline to launch and raise a seed round meant selling directly to the government was too slow. Their brilliant workaround was to start on the commercial side, build a solid business, and then circle back to revolutionize the government’s acquisition processes. This strategic decision set the stage for USUL’s explosive growth.

When GSOF Met USUL: The Perfect API Integration

The connection between GSOF and USUL feels almost destined. It began when one of USUL’s early customers introduced them to GSOF’s Jessica Del Po, who immediately recognized the profound mission alignment. The partnership “steamrolled” from there.

Jason Garo, GSOF’s Corporate Partner Manager, became a vocal champion. He saw something truly unique in USUL, realizing there was “nothing on the market” that did what they did. While large primes have extensive resources for navigating federal portals, USUL offered an unparalleled advantage for GSOF’s smaller corporate partners.

Jason’s enthusiasm stemmed from USUL’s eagerness to co-develop features. GSOF’s team brought real-world pain points to the table, and the young founders would respond, “Yeah, we’ll look into it!” This collaborative approach enhanced USUL’s platform and provided them with invaluable insights. As Jason puts it, it was a “symbiotic relationship” where USUL was “getting free school” while providing an incredible tool for GSOFs Corporate Partners.

GSOF is very careful about who they partner with, only choosing those that truly “add to the mission.” USUL was thoroughly vetted and welcomed because they were truly “cutting edge” and “it literally changed the entire way something works.” GSOF’s approval served as a strong endorsement, signaling to the defense world that USUL was legitimate and trustworthy.

De-mystifying USUL: Your AI Co-Pilot for Defense Capture

So, what exactly is USUL? It’s an AI platform designed to help you win defense contracts. Think of it as your intelligent assistant for defense growth, unifying data to help you stay lean, find funding, and win contracts. Instead of drowning in data, USUL delivers actionable intelligence through three core functions:

  1. Automated Opportunity Discovery: USUL ingests your company’s capabilities and products, then automatically matches them against every open government contract daily, from SAM.gov to OTAs and service-specific portals. You wake up to a personalized “Contract Inbox” with curated opportunities, relevance scores, and contact information, replacing manual searching with AI-powered precision.
  2. Strategic Market Intelligence: The platform provides a 360-degree view of the defense landscape. You can explore complex DoD organizational charts, identify key decision-makers, track PEO budgets, and monitor competitor activity. Its “Market Maps” feature connects your capabilities to every relevant federal budget line, revealing market size, unallocated funds, and PEO demand signals.
  3. Seamless Workflow & Planning: From a proprietary calendar of Industry Days to a proactive Recompete Tracker, USUL equips you for long-term success. The platform’s true power lies in its ease of use. You can perform complex “capability searches” using natural language, it’s as easy as chatting with an AI. A query that once took weeks to build a vendor list now delivers results overnight, all while integrating with CRMs like HubSpot and Salesforce.

The GSOF Compass: Pointing Our Partners to Perfect-Fit Contracts with USUL

The GSOF-USUL partnership is a dynamic ecosystem where both sides thrive, accelerating mission success.

How GSOF Leverages USUL
screenshot 2025 09 16 at 9.33.23 am

GSOF provides its corporate partners a distinct advantage through USUL, a platform utilized by our entire team of six Corporate Partner Managers (PRMs). For every interested partner, our PRMs build a company-specific, “living” profile that catalogues their capabilities in a machine-readable format.

This catalogue becomes a powerful asset when our team uses USUL’s most impactful feature, “Concept 2” Capability Searches, to meet government needs. For instance, a request for “battery powered underwater vehicles in Europe” no longer takes weeks of research. Instead, USUL delivers a qualified short-list of vendors overnight.

This transforms the matchmaking process. As PRM Jason Garo puts it, the speed is almost instantaneous: “I will look for a capability, go use the bathroom, and come back. And by the time I come back, it’s already there.” Armed with this data, the GSOF team can broker highly-qualified introductions, demonstrating a vendor’s precise fit and streamlining the funding process for government customers.

How USUL Has Grown with GSOF

The impact of the partnership on USUL has been explosive. Jarren Reid states that the “largest inflection point” in USUL’s revenue was the two months following SOF Week. GSOF’s introductions “broke our company in a good way.” The demand was so overwhelming (20 demo bookings a day) that they had to temporarily filter sales to manage the surge, a clear signal of “product market fit.”

GSOF’s role went beyond introductions; it provided crucial brand awareness and validation. When the GSOF team walked Jarren around the SOF Week floor, introducing a 21-year-old CEO to industry giants, it instantly established USUL’s credibility. The team also served as mentors, providing insights into the unique nuances of the SOF community and helping USUL refine its offerings based on real-world feedback.

Innovating for the Future: The AI Frontier

USUL isn’t resting on its laurels. Jarren Reid’s vision is to fundamentally redefine how companies and governments interact globally. He envisions a world where every business-to-government interaction happens through a “three-click user experience” in USUL. The ultimate mission is to ensure the “best tech from the best companies” gets deployed as quickly as possible to the warfighter. Their goal is to build a “$100 billion company,” an ambition reflected in Jarren and Oliver’s decision to put their Stanford studies on hold to dedicate themselves fully to USUL.

By basing their company in San Francisco, the epicenter of AI development, they are positioned to stay at the forefront of this rapidly evolving technology and continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in defense acquisition.

The Future is Now: Building. Deterring. Winning.

The partnership between GSOF and USUL represents a powerful leap forward. GSOF, with its mission to advance SOF capabilities, finds in USUL an indispensable tool for realizing that vision at scale. By leveraging USUL’s AI, GSOF can efficiently connect innovative solutions with critical government needs while empowering our corporate partners to succeed.

USUL’s journey, born from a young visionary’s frustration with outdated systems, mirrors the innovative spirit that GSOF champions. This isn’t just a story about a successful startup; it’s a testament to the transformative power of partnership, innovation, and a shared commitment to equipping our Special Operations Forces with the very best. The future of defense contracting is no longer about manual searches and opaque networks; it’s about intelligent, data-driven connections, amplified by the strategic alliance between GSOF and USUL.
