Lt Gen Fiel retired as the Commander, Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) in September of 2014. AFSOC is an Air Force Major Command and the Air Component of U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM). General Fiel has held a variety of command positions at the Squadron, Group, Wing, and NAF, as well as several Joint SOF positions at SOCOM to include the J-8, Chief of Staff, and Vice Commander.
He has significant experience in combat leadership positions in major joint contingency operations to include Bosnia and Kosovo as well as being forward deployed multiple times as a Task Force Commander for operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
