Dr. Dan Irizarry is a graduate of Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland. A board-certified family physician, he completed his internship and residency at Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Dr. Irizarry presently serves as owner and CEO of MEDSIM Global Consulting, LLC, providing medical and medical simulation subject matter expertise to a wide variety of customers. In parallel, he serves as the senior medical simulation advisor supporting research and development for Trauma FX, a world leader in building highly realistic, high-fidelity trauma manikins to support military and civilian trauma training. Dan also practices family medicine and serves as the medical director at Altamonte MD, a full spectrum primary care clinic in Orlando, Florida.
Retired with 26 years of active duty service in August 2018, COL(R) Irizarry’s career spanned the full spectrum of military medicine from direct combat medical support in multiple areas of operation at the tactical level with the 82D Airborne Division and 3rd Special Forces Group, to operational command of garrison healthcare facilities and strategic SOCOM leadership as the first command surgeon for NATO Special Operations Headquarters in Mons, Belgium. As NSHQ command surgeon, he built and led a team that envisioned and implemented the NATO SOF Medicine Development Initiative (NSMDI) designed to improve Alliance SOF medical support through the establishment of the SOF Allied Centre for Medical Education (ACME). Today, NSHQ’s SOF ACME continues to teach NSMDI strategic, operational and tactical medical courses augmented by immersive modeling and simulation to improve SOF medical systems and individual skills. In his last assignment, he served as the first clinical advisor to the Defense Health Agency’s (DHA) Office of the Joint Project Manager for Medical Modeling and Simulation (JPM MM&S), Orlando, Florida, where he helped lead advance development and acquisition of combat and hospital based simulation capabilities in the live, virtual and blended simulation arenas.
Dr. Irizarry’s unique qualifications include Program Manager Level II certification and Level III Science and Technology Manager training by the Defense Acquisition University. While serving as an instructor for many years, Dr. Irizarry maintains Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support provider certifications. His awards include: Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Order of Military Medical Merit; the Combat Medic and Expert Field Medic Badge, Parachutist’s Badge, and Flight Surgeon Badge. He routinely lectures at international conferences including the Special Operations Medical Association Medical Assembly, International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare, and the International Training Technology Exhibition and Conference on military medicine and military medical simulation topics.
Dan lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife, Kelly and their seven children.
