Ivan Caruso retired as a Major General in December 2023 after over forty years of service in the Italian Army. He is a graduate of the Italian Army Military Academy in Modena where, after 25 years, he commanded the Cadet regiment. He has commanded Special Forces units at all levels including Deputy Commander Ranger Company; Commander, Ranger Battalion “Monte Cervino”, first Commander 4th Ranger Regiment and Commanding General of the Italian Army Special Forces Command.
He participated in the UN Operation in Mozambique in 1993, in SFOR Operation in Bosnia- Herzegovina in 1997 and into Afghanistan (ISAF operation) in 2010 as Deputy Chief of Staff/ Operations Regional Command West (Herat). He was later assigned to the Italian Permanent Representation to NATO in Brussels ( Belgium) (2010-2013) in charge to advise the Ambassador on the major NATO operations and overseeing, among other duties, the generation of the NATO Operation Unified Protector in Libya.
General officer assignments include Deputy Director of the Cooperative Security Division into the NATO International Military Staff, Executive Coordinator and Secretary of the NATO Military Committee, where he served with 31 NATO Allies and 47 NATO partners.
He is an active member of the Alpini Airborne (Ranger) Association and is a defence consultant for DATAMINR Inc.
